At least two people were injured when a pipe bomb exploded near the Egyptian presidential palace in Cairo.

MOSCOW, January 23 (Sputnik) — A pipe bomb exploded near the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt, at least two people are injured, a Sputnik news agency correspondent reported Friday.

A palace guard and an Egyptian armed forces officer were wounded. One of the injured is in a critical condition, according to medical sources.

A gunmen on a motorcycle killed an Egyptian policeman and wounded a second who were guarding banks in the busy Sphinx Square, a busy commercial district of Cairo on Saturday, Associated Press reported, citing local media. - Sputnik International

A source in the law enforcement told Sputnik that the explosion was likely to have been triggered remotely via a mobile phone.

Soldiers of Egypt (Ajnad Misr) militant group took responsibility for the incident on its Twitter account.

According to Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, Ajnad Misr is a jihadist group that targets what it considers "criminal elements" in the country's government. Last January, the group received attention following a media statement claiming responsibility for attacks on security forces in Cairo.
