LONDON, January 18 (Sputnik) — British police should tighten security in Jewish areas ahead of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day observed on January 27 amid recent attacks in Paris and possible risks to the Jewish community, British Home Secretary Theresa May said Sunday.

“The attack on a Jewish supermarket, where four people were killed, is a chilling reminder of antisemitism, not just in France but the recent antisemitic prejudice that we sadly have seen in this country… And that means we must all redouble our efforts to wipe out antisemitism here in the United Kingdom,” May was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

May’s comments came a few days after Britain’s counter-terrorism officer Mark Rowley warned about possible attacks on the Jewish community in the United Kingdom.

Fears in Britain have risen in the wake of three terrorist attacks in Paris last week. In one of the attacks, a gunman killed four hostages in a kosher supermarket.

New concerns grew after London posters for Holocaust memorial event were daubed with graffiti saying “liars” and “killer”. The police have launched an investigation into the case.

Earlier this week, Mark Rowley said that UK police had already been stepping up security in areas with large Jewish communities.

According to The Telegraph, 263,000 people in the United Kingdom have described themselves as Jewish in the 2011 Census.
