A fire at the French end of the Channel Tunnel has caused the service to stop for the day.

MOSCOW, January 17 (Sputnik) – The Channel Tunnel linking England and France has been closed "until further notice" after a lorry fire at the French side, close to Calais.

"A lorry fire has led to the closure of both bores of the Channel Tunnel," Kent police told Sky News. "The fire was at the French end of the tunnel and is being dealt with by the French authorities. There are no reported injuries, however, rail passengers are advised to expect significant delays whilst the vehicle is being recovered and fumes are cleared from the tunnels."

Train operator Eurostar said on its website: "We are sorry but we are unable to run any further trains today because Eurotunnel has been closed due to smoke detected in the north tunnel. If you were planning to travel today, we advise you to postpone your journey and not to come to the station."

According to Le Shuttle, which carries road vehicle through the tunnel, the service was stopped after CO2 detectors in one of the tunnels were activated. Trains travelling in both directions have been sent back to their point of departure.
