Russian Drama Leviathan Fetches Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film

Russian drama film "Leviathan" by Andrey Zvyagintsev has been named the best foreign language film at the 72nd Golden Globe awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, the United States.

WASHINGTON, January 12 (Sputnik) — Russian drama film "Leviathan", directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, has been named the best foreign language film at the 72nd Golden Globe awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, the United States.

Other nominees were Swedish drama "Force Majeure (Turist)" by Ruben Ostlund, an Israeli film about women's rights ''Gett: The Trial Of Viviane Amsalem" by Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz, Polish film ''Ida" by Pawel Pawlikowski and Estonian "Tangerines (Mandariinid)" by Zaza Urushadze.

Speaking from the podium, film director Andrey Zvyagintsev said he was immensely happy to win this prize, while the film's producer Alexander Rodnyansky added "Leviathan" nomination proved it made no difference where a film originated from.

"Leviathan" also won the best screenplay award at Cannes in 2014. It tells a story of a man who opposes a corrupt mayor of a Russian coastal town when he learns that his house will be demolished. The protagonist turns to his old friend for help but it only brings more trouble upon the main character and his family.
