Ursula von der Leyen stated that the Islamic State poses a serious to Germany. The German government is planning to proceed with military supplies and launch a training program for Iraqi Kurds.

MOSCOW, January 11 (Sputnik) — During her visit to Baghdad on Sunday, German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen stressed that Germany is planning to continue its arms supply to Iraqi Kurds and would carry out military training in the northern regions of Iraq, Deutsche Welle reported.

"The more successful the IS is; the more attractive it is for young people," von der Leyen said. "The longer the IS remains strong and attractive the more the threat rises for us at home," she added.

Germany May Send More Soldiers to Train Anti-IS Kurdish Troops in Iraq
In the middle of December, the German Bundestag decided to expand its training mission in Iraq, designed to train Kurdish troops over the course of one year. German authorities are planning to send 100 combatants to northern Iraq, according to the official website of the German government.

Germany has already supplied Iraqi Kurds with ammunition and vehicles. The country has spent roughly 70 million euros for military purposes in Kurdish-run northern Iraq and is expected to spend more, as Kurdish leaders have already officially asked German authorities for additional arms and ammunition.

The rise of the Islamic State poses a serious threat to Germany and other European countries as the radical ideology becomes more and more attractive for young people residing in the EU. According to the latest estimates, 3,400 people from the EU have embraced the radical ideology and attempted to join the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
