PARIS, January 7 (Sputnik) – French President Francois Hollande announced Wednesday a day of national mourning following a terrorist attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine's office in Paris.

The president said that, despite numerous threats, the staff of the magazine continued their work, fighting for freedom of speech.

"I would like to express gratitude to [the victims'] families and everyone who was killed or injured as a result of this despicable terrorist attack. Today, they are our heroes," Hollande said.

On Wednesday, three unidentified men opened fire in satirical weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris, killing 12 people. The magazine's editor, Stephane Charbonnier, is among those killed in the attack.

The same day, Hollande said that French authorities would track the perpetrators of the attack down and bring those responsible to justice.
