WASHINGTON, January 7 (Sputnik) — The top four Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders have been invited to meet with US President Barack Obama next week to discuss the 2015 legislative agenda priorities and foreign policy issues, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
“This will be an opportunity for them to talk about a range of issues, most importantly the legislative agenda for 2015, as well as a couple of foreign policy issues," Earnest told reporters Tuesday.
“These are areas where the president [Obama] has long talked about the benefits it would have for the American economy to make progress… and Republicans have indicated an interest in pursuing them as well, so that would be part of it," Earnest said.
Earnest did not provide any specific details on what Congress and President Obama would discuss regarding foreign policy, but said that the meeting would be a way for the president to “update members of Congress based on their own areas of interest.”
The 114th Congress began its first session on Tuesday and elected Republican Representative of Ohio John Boehner as Speaker of the House for his 3rd term.
After winning the majority seats in the House and Senate during the November 2014 midterm elections, Republicans now hold control of both chambers of Congress.
