Protests Against Alleged Police Racism to Continue in New York City Monday

A 24-hour demonstration is going to take place at Grand Central Station on Monday, following similar rallies in Staten Island and other sites across the city.

NEW YORK, January 05 (Sputnik) – Protests over alleged police racism and the lack of prosecutions of law enforcement officials responsible for the deaths of unarmed black men are set to continue in New York's Grand Central Station on Monday.

“We will bear witness, with the names and stories of over 150 people killed or brutalized with impunity,” protest organizers said via social media.

A 24-hour demonstration is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. local time (10 p.m. GMT) at Grand Central Station on Monday, following similar rallies in Staten Island and other sites across the city.

“Every single day is a risk for black and brown people, coming and going, living daily life in a culture of racist violence and police brutality,” organizers said.

Protests have also continued in Washington, New York and other US cities over the behavior of allegedly racially prejudiced police following two controversial grand jury decisions last year not to prosecute the white officers who killed unarmed black men, Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

Garner, 43, an overweight street peddler selling untaxed cigarettes, died from a chokehold by Officer Daniel Pantaleo in New York on July 19. Brown, 18, was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9.

The events precipitated a stand-off between law enforcement and civilians in the United States, culminating in the murder of two New York Police Department officers on December 20. The murderer, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley who took his own life shortly after, was said to have vowed revenge for the lives of Brown and Garner on social media.
