Department of State spokesperson said the United States is reviewing requests from Indonesian diplomatic officials for Washington to help with locating the missing Air Asia passenger jet.

WASHINGTON, December 29 (Sputnik) — The United States is reviewing requests from Indonesian diplomatic officials for Washington to help with locating the missing Air Asia passenger jet that allegedly crashed over the Java Sea, Department of State spokesperson said Monday.

"Our [US] embassy in Jakarta is in close contact with Indonesian officials and today we received a request for assistance locating the airplane and we are reviewing that request to find out how best we can meet Indonesia's request for assistance," Spokesperson Jeff Rathke said during a press briefing.

Rathke confirmed that there were no US citizens on board the missing flight.

The Air Asia Flight QZ8501 went missing on Sunday with 162 people on board. The passenger jet allegedly crashed into the Java Sea after experiencing severe turbulence and trying to change its course, the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency said Sunday. The flight en route from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control earlier on the same day.
