MOSCOW, December 29 (Sputnik) — The US Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation for a Polish sailor gone missing in the Pacific Ocean near Wake Island, the Khon2 TV channel reported.
According to the channel, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center at the US Coast Guard was notified of the disappearance of a 49-year-old Polish national on Saturday. The man was on board a 622-foot freight ship called Toscana.
Khon2 added that the Polish man was last seen on Friday evening, and that the crew learned about his disappearance only 12 hours into the incident.
The crew of the ship also searched for its missing crew member, though they had to take the ship to its next destination.
Wake Island, where the incident happened, is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located some 2,000 miles west of Hawaii and 2,000 miles east of Japan.
