MOSCOW, December 26 (Sputnik) – Two Israeli border guards were stabbed in the Old City of Jerusalem as worshippers were leaving the Temple Mount after the morning prayers, the Times of Israel reports.

The attacker, who remains at large, stabbed a 19-year-old officer in the neck. He then assaulted a 35-year-old officer, who came to the assistance of the first one.

"This is a serious event, an attack on police officers. The Jerusalem Police will work to apprehend the terrorist," Moshe Edri, the chief of the Jerusalem Police said, as quoted by the Ynet.

Both border guards received light injuries and are conscious. They were treated by medics at the scene and then taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Jerusalem has been at the heart of mounting tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. Terrorist attacks have been on the rise in the city. In mid-November, five people were killed and seven wounded in an attack carried out by two Palestinians armed with knives and axes at a synagogue. Earlier that month, Israeli police killed a man who drove his car into a crowd of pedestrians, killing one and injuring 13 others.
