MOSCOW, December 9 (Sputnik) – The European Union announced plans to boost assistance to Syrian refugees in Turkey with an additional 10 million euro ($12.3 million) of humanitarian funding, The European Commission said in a press release published Tuesday.

"The European Commission is stepping up its assistance with an additional €10 million [$12.3 million] in humanitarian funding both inside Turkey and inside Syria via cross-border assistance from Turkey," the press release said.

The funding was announced by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Christos Stylianides during their meeting with Syrian refugees in Turkey's border town of Kilis.

According to the press release, the European Commission has already contributed €187.5million ($231.7 million) to support refugees in Turkey since the beginning of the Syrian conflict.

Peaceful protests began in Syria in March 2011 and quickly descended into all-out fighting between government forces, rebels and jihadists, some of them linked to al-Qaeda. According to UN estimates, the ongoing civil war has already claimed more than 200,000 lives and forced as many as 3 million more to flee their homes.
