Philippines disaster management body announced Monday that the number of people evacuated in the Philippines due to typhoon has exceeded one million.

MOSCOW, December 8 (Sputnik) – The number of people evacuated in the Philippines due to Typhoon Hagupit has exceeded one million, the country's disaster management body said Monday.

The eye of the typhoon which hit the Philippines’ eastern coast on Saturday evening is now located 50 kilometers (31 miles) to the northeast of Romblon Island and is moving in the north-west direction, according to the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

NDRRMC has confirmed only two deaths resulting from the typhoon, although local reports suggest the death toll has reached at least six people.

Typhoons commonly occur in the Philippines between June and November and cost the country millions of dollars in damage.

Last year the Philippines was hit by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded. According to UN officials, about 11 million people were affected by it.
