CAIRO, December 3 (Sputnik) — Egypt's Criminal Court in Cairo on Tuesday sentenced to death 188 supporters of former President Mohammed Morsi over a deadly attack on police.
The accused were found guilty of taking part in a an attack on a police station in Kerdassa, a village on the outskirts of Cairo, on August 14, 2013, a RIA Novosti reporter said. Eleven policemen died in the violence, which happened on the same day that security forces scattered two major camps of supporters of deposed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
The death sentences are preliminary and need to be approved by the country's highest Muslim religious authority, the grand mufti.
According to the Egypt's law, the death penalty waits to be approved of the Grand Mufti, the highest official of religious law in Egypt.
In March and April, the criminal court of Egyptian town of Minya sentenced to death over a thousand of people for killing a police officer.
Egypt Court's decisions sparked critique of the United States, the European Union and Human Rights organizations. All death warrants have been appealed by the General Prosecution Office of Egypt.
