MOSCOW, November 30 (Sputnik) – The best way to lead the European Union to a full collapse is to let Ukraine join the alliance, Russian lawmaker Alexei Pushkov wrote on Twitter Sunday.

"The Roman Pope gave a grim assessment of the European Union. If Brussels wants to completely do away with the EU, the best way is to let Ukraine join it," the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma (the lower house of parliament), said on his Twitter page.

On Tuesday, Pope Francis told the European Parliament that the great ideas behind the creation of the European Union have been replaced by "bureaucratic technicalities" and that the European Union was in danger of being perceived as harmful to Europe's peoples.

In September, Ukraine and the EU parliament ratified the economic and political parts of the Association Agreement. That same month, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko unveiled a plan of reforms he wants to implement until 2020. Poroshenko said his "Strategy-2020" plan would help implement reforms and special programs that will make Ukraine eligible for EU membership within six years.

Meanwhile, Russia's relations with the European Union have deteriorated amid the Ukrainian crisis. The alliance has repeatedly accused Russia of meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs, sending troops to Ukraine, and even went as far as to claim that Moscow planned to invade Ukraine. However, none of these statements were supported with any evidence.

The West has imposed several rounds of economic sanctions against Russia over its alleged role in the Ukrainian crisis. Moscow responded with a one-year ban on certain food imports from a number of countries that have introduced restrictive measures against Russia.
