Seven Hong Kong Policemen Arrested for Beating Protester: Police

MOSCOW, November 26 (Sputnik) — Seven police officers have been arrested for beating a protester in Hong Kong, police said in a statement Wednesday.

The police announced that seven officers had been arrested for “assault occasioning actual bodily harm”, which took place amid clashes on October 15, as cited by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

The police also stated that the victim had failed to show up for a police lineup on Wednesday and urged him to cooperate with investigators, RTHK reported.

In October, Hong Kong authorities announced that an “impartial investigation” had been launched as a local television channel aired footage showing several police officers carrying a protester to a street corner and beating him for several minutes.

The protester was soon identified as Civic Party member Ken Tsang. Photos released by the party showed Tsang with heavy bruising on his face and body.

Protests in Hong Kong began in late September in Hong Kong, after Beijing announced its plans to limit candidates for the 2017 Chief Executive election. Hong Kong people will only be able to vote for candidates vetted by the standing committee of China’s national legislature.
