EU Parliament to Check Legality of EU-Canada Deal on Passenger Name Data

The European Parliament will examine the European Court of Justice (ECJ) the EU-Canada agreement on the exchange of Passenger Name Records (PNR) to its eligibility to fundamental rights.

MOSCOW, November 25 (Sputnik) — The members of the European Parliament will take to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) the EU-Canada agreement on the transfer of Passenger Name Records (PNR) to assess its compliance with the EU treaties and Charter of Fundamental Rights, a press release issued by the Parliament on Tuesday said.

"We want legal certainty for EU citizens and air carriers, not just with regard to the EU-Canada PNR agreement, but also as a benchmark for future agreements with other countries which involve the mass collection of European citizens' personal data," Sophie in't Veld, European Parliament rapporteur, was quoted as saying in the press release.

The resolution was approved with 383 in favor, 271 against and 47 abstaining.

The PNR agreement was signed on June 25, 2014, though it needs the European Parliament's approval before taking effect.

Currently, the European Union has agreements with Australia, Canada and the United States on the exchange and use of passengers' records.
