MOSCOW, November 24 (Sputnik) – Ferguson remains tense, waiting for a grand jury decision on the shooting of an African American teen on Monday, AP said.
The grand jury met on Friday, but failed to reach a decision, which is now widely expected to resume on Monday. The 12-person jury is working on the case of Darren Wilson, the white police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African American teen in August, AP reported.
It is hard to predict how long the process might take. Residents are anxious and some fear possible unrests. More than 100 people marched on the streets of Ferguson late Sunday night, carrying banners that read “Where Do You Stand?” and “Black Lives Matter”, Reuters said.
“The more that they drag this out, the angrier people are going to be,” said protester Reggie Cunningham, quoted by AP.
The grand jurors have to decide whether or not Wilson had opened fire at Brown in self-defense. The jury deliberates in secret and sets its own schedule. According to Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson it is common for jurors to take a while deliberating over such complex cases, before announcing their decision. Even if the jury meets on Monday, there is no guarantee that they reach a decision, ABC News reported.
President Barack Obama called on the public to remain calm, before the much-anticipated decision, Fox News reported.
