CHISINAU, November 22 (Sputnik) — A 5.8-magnitude earthquake happened in Moldova at 19:14 GMT Saturday.

“It was a crustal earthquake. 5.8-magnitude tremors were felt in Chisinau. It has been the most powerful earthquake in the region this year. The magnitude of earlier tremors did not exceed the 5.4 magnitude,” Ilya Iliesh, Head of the Seismology Center at Moldova’s Academy of Sciences, told RIA Novosti.

No casualties or destruction have been reported so far.

According to the Romanian Institute of Earth Physics, the epicentre of the quake was located in Vrancea in south-eastern Romania, which remains the most earthquake-prone area in Romania. In 1977, an 8-magnitude earthquake happened there. Around 1,500 people died as a result of the quake.
