November 21, 2013 became a turning point in Ukraine’s recent history.

Massive public protests started that day, later spiraling out of control and leading to clashes between police and civilians, a subsequent regime change, Crimea’s reunion with Russia and the military confrontation between the new government forces and self-proclaimed republics in the country’s East, which continue to this day.

Initially, people took to the streets to protest Kiev’s decision to suspend the signing of Ukraine’s association agreement with the EU, which was a stumbling block in the county’s policy highlighting the historic divide between Ukraine’s pro-European west and the pro-Russian east.

We compiled a photo gallery to show you what was happening in the heart of Ukraine a year ago.

Most of the pictures in this set were taken by our colleague Andrei Stenin, who was killed covering the conflict in eastern Ukraine in August.

The circumstances of Andrei’s death are still being investigated.
