WASHINGTON, November 18 (Sputnik) — The United States has announced rewards of up to $1 million for information on alleged Romanian Internet fraud conspirators Nicolae Posescu and Dumitru Bosogioiu, US State Department said in a press release issued Tuesday.
"A reward of up to $1 million is offered for information on Popescu, who allegedly led a cyber fraud scheme… A reward of up to $750,000 is offered for information on Bosogioiu, who allegedly participated in the scheme as a key member," the release read.
The alleged cyber criminals placed on US websites numerous advertisements to sell cars, motorcycles, boats, and other expensive items that never existed, according to the release.
"Victims were directed to wire payments to fraudulent bank accounts, from which the money was transmitted to the leaders of the organization in Romania," the release explained.
Posescu's alleged conspiracy scheme potentially resulted in millions of dollars losses by US citizens.
On Tuesday, US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) added Popescu to its Cyber's Most Wanted list for conspiracy to commit "wire fraud, money laundering, passport fraud and trafficking in counterfeit service marks."
Launched in 2013, FBI Cyber's Most Wanted list includes about 20 cyber criminals who committed cyber fraud on a global scale. The US government considers cyber threat among top national security threats.
