Five people were injured in a car bomb blast near the Baghdad international airport.

MOSCOW, November 16 (Sputnik) —The Islamic State (IS) militants have claimed responsibility for the car bomb blast which has injured five at the checkpoint by the international airport in Baghdad, Iraq, the Guardian reported Sunday citing the Twitter accounts that support IS militants.

According to the British newspaper, a message was distributed on Twitter that the IS Sunni militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack by what they described as “the first” suicide bomber “to receive the Americans” exiting from the airport. Local police, however, gave no indications that any US citizens have been targeted by the blast.

Earlier on Sunday, the Iraqi Al-Hadath news agency reported that five people have been injured in a car bomb blast near the Baghdad international airport. According to the agency’s sources, the car bomb went off by the security checkpoint where the passengers are being searched before boarding the taxis that deliver them to the airport building.

Iraq is suffering from the advance of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group that launched attacks in the country in June 2014. A US-led international coalition of more than 60 states is currently carrying out airstrikes against the militant group's positions in Iraq and Syria, where the group has been fighting since 2012.
