WASHINGTON, November 8 (RIA Novosti) – US President Barack Obama will announce his nomination of New York federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch for the post of Attorney General on Saturday, the White House said in a statement.

"Tomorrow, the President will announce his intent to nominate U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch to be the Attorney General of the United States. The President will make the announcement in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, and will be joined by Attorney General Holder and Ms. Lynch," the statement, released Friday, says.

"Ms. Lynch is a strong, independent prosecutor who has twice led one of the most important U.S. Attorney's Offices in the country. She will succeed Eric Holder, whose tenure has been marked by historic gains in the areas of criminal justice reform and civil rights enforcement," the statement adds.

If confirmed by the Senate, Lynch will become the first African American woman to hold the Attorney General position.

Earlier on Friday, the White House said that Obama had nominated his advisor Antony Blinken for the post of Deputy Secretary of State.

Following the announcement, US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement that Blinken's "tremendous breadth and depth of experience" could be vital to the US government's foreign policy.
