Syrian Observatory For Human Rights said in a statement on its website Friday that Islamic State had suspended teaching in Syrian schools.

MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) — The Islamic State (IS) closed most of schools in Syria's province Deir Ezzor and obliged local teachers to attend Sharia courses till a new educational curriculum is prepared, Syrian Observatory For Human Rights (SOHR) said in a statement on its website Friday.

According to SOHR sources, on Wednesday, the IS gathered local teachers in a mosque and informed them about its decision that "teachers must undergo Sharia course in al- Rawda Mosque in al- Mayadin until the completion of the preparation of a new educational curriculum instead of the blasphemous current curriculum".

SOHR also noted that in another Syria's city al- Bokamal, the IS extremists informed local teachers of obligatory enrollment to the Sharia course and closure of schools.

The Sunni extremist group IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the IS seized vast areas in Iraq and Syria and declared the establishment of an Islamic caliphate there. In September, the IS already closed some schools in the Iraqi city of Mosul and banned most school subjects except religious studies and imposed a new Sharia educational curriculum.
