MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) — Amnesty International's office in the Netherlands has welcomed a pride parade that took place in the capital of Montenegro on Sunday, a statement published on the organization's global blog Friday said.

"Emile Affolter, Amnesty Netherlands press officer, celebrates the courage of those taking part in Montenegro's 2014 LGBT Pride, after last year's event was marred by shocking violence," the statement said.

Unlike last year, no violence was registered during the pride on Sunday, the statement added. The about 160 people who took part in the parade were guarded by 1,800 police officers. The watchdog acknowledged the professionalism showcased.

The parade held last year turned into violent counter-demonstrations, with more than 60 people injured.

"Hopefully this Pride is another step towards a Montenegro that not only ensures protection for the LGBT community during the event, but protects, accepts and embraces it all year round," the statement added.

The watchdog is hopeful the pride "is just the beginning."

According to Amnesty International, approximately 70% of Montenegrins regard homosexuality as a form of disease.
