Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has supported President Petro Poroshenko's initiative to submit a proposal on the abolition of the Donbas regions' special status law to the country's parliament.

KIEV, November 4 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has supported President Petro Poroshenko's initiative to submit a bill on the abolition of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions' special status law to the country's parliament, the council's deputy secretary said Tuesday.

"NSDC has made a decision on recommending the president to urgently submit a law on the abolition of a law on regional self-government [in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions] to the Verkhovna Rada [Parliament] of Ukraine," Oleksandr Litvinenko said.

The official added that the laws regulating economic activity and taxation in the breakaway regions are also processing.

The law on self-administration in parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, also known as the Donbas, was passed by the Ukrainian parliament on September 16, following the September 5 ceasefire agreement between Kiev and independence supporters of eastern Ukraine.

According to the deal, Kiev was to ensure early local elections in the two breakaway regions.

On Sunday, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics held elections for the heads of local governments and representatives of legislative bodies.

Following the vote, President Poroshenko said that Ukraine will not recognize the elections' results and announced his plans to scrap the special status of the Donbas. NATO and the European Union have joined Kiev in condemning the election and blamed Russia, who had recognized the vote, for wrecking peace process.
