DONETSK, November 3 (RIA Novosti) — Shooting between Ukrainian security forces and independence supporters has resumed at Donetsk airport after a day without shelling, RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the scene Monday.
According to the correspondent, gunfire sounds coming from the northern part of Donetsk are clearly audible in the city center.
On Sunday, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics held elections for the heads of local governments and representatives of legislative bodies.
In April, Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation in the country's southeast, where independence supporters refused to accept the new government that was put in power following a coup in February. The military actions brought about a severe political, economic and humanitarian crisis in the region.
With the mediation of Russia and the OSCE, Kiev and the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics agreed a truce. Generally, it has been observed, but both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating it.
