On May 2, clashes broke out in Odessa between activists who supported the idea of Ukraine adopting a federal government in which the regions would have a greater degree of power, and "Ultra" fans of the Odessa and Kharkiv football teams, who were later joined by pro-Euromaidan activists and right-wing nationalists.

The pro-Kiev radicals and members of the Right Sector trapped the anti-government protesters in the Trade Unions House and set the building on fire using Molotov cocktails. When they attempted to escape the conflagration, they were beaten by the encircling crowd.
