Luhansk residents have shown "huge interest" in participating in the local elections held on Sunday in the region, a German observer said.

MOSCOW, November 2 (RIA Novosti) — No violations or provocations were registered during the on-going elections in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), the chief editor of the German monthly magazine Zuerst! and an observer at the elections, Manuel Ochsenreiter, told RIA Novosti Sunday.

"It's well organized, also it's a big challenge. Now everything is calm and peaceful, no provocations or violations," Ochsenreiter said.

"We were visiting polling stations. They are all very crowded, it's a huge interest of the population at the elections. You can see it by masses of people standing inside and in front the polling stations," the observer said.

In May, the region declared itself a "people's republic" and called to secede from Ukraine after the country went through a painful political crisis, which resulted in a coup in February.

Polls are underway at 102 voting stations across Luhansk. People are voting for the regional leader and parliament, while Kiev said it will not recognize the results, calling the vote "illegal".
