MOSCOW, October 30 (RIA Novosti) – The killing of an African-American teenager in the US city of Ferguson highlighted the scope of US police discrimination against racial minorities, Russian Human Rights Ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov stated.
"The Ferguson shooting highlighted the regular and widespread practice of discrimination against racial minorities by US law enforcers," Dolgov wrote on his Twitter account Thursday.
Michael Brown, an 18-year-old teenager, was shot by a police officer on August 9. The incident sparked a wave of protests in Ferguson and across the United States against the abuse of power by law enforcers.
Amnesty International documented human rights violations in the United States following the incident.
"The shooting of Michael Brown highlighted on a national level the persistent and widespread pattern of racially discriminatory treatment by law enforcement officers across the United States," says the release published on the Amnesty International website on October 24.
Observers from the organization also said they had documented cases of power abuse by the US police, "including unjustified stops and searches, ill treatment and excessive, and sometimes lethal, use of force," as stated on the website.
Michael Brown's death has triggered discussions on racism and policing in the United States while the protests brought the issue to international attention.
