UNITED NATIONS, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - Despite all the difficulties, political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis is becoming possible, thanks to the agreements reached in Minsk, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said Friday.

“The prospects of political settlement in Ukraine are becoming more clear – after the Minsk Protocol and Memorandum have been signed in September,” Churkin said at a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.

The Russian envoy noted that the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements is not going smoothly, “but this only highlights the need for further thorough work of [all] the sides [concerned] and for the fair international support of the talks [between Kiev and independence supporters of Donetsk and Luhansk],” Churkin concluded.

The military operation initiated by Kiev authorities in mid-April to suppress independence supporters in eastern Ukraine claimed the lives of 3,700 people and left over 8,800 injured, according to the latest UN estimates.

On September 5, at a meeting in Minsk the conflicting sides with the mediation of Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe agreed on a ceasefire that came into force on the same day. On September 19, a memorandum stipulating the implementation of the truce was adopted during another round of the Contact Group talks in the Belarusian capital. Since then, both the Kiev forces and independence fighters repeatedly accused each other of violating the truce.
