MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti), Daria Chernyshova - Fighting in the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani, under attack by Islamic State (IS) militants, is only a part of much more complex Syrian conflict that has to be considered before making any significant decisions, Turkish Ambassador to Russia Umit Yardim told RIA Novosti on Friday.
"Any solution about Kobani may not impact the general Syrian crisis. This region is part of a very wide problem. So we have to touch the problem of what is going on in the region in general," the ambassador argued.
Yardim continued, saying that despite international media focus on the battle for Kobani, Turkey has to find a way to contribute to the resolution of the Syrian crisis as a whole, rather than immediately authorizing military action.
"From the beginning we have some doubts about the continuing of bombing Kobani region. But it is not enough to solve such a deep-rooted crisis, so their bombing cannot be a unique instrument," he said, adding that the Kurdish Peshmerga forces may have an impact on the situation in the coming days.
Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, is a city in Syrian Kurdistan bordering Turkey that has been under siege by the IS for over a month. The IS offensive has caused a massive outflow of refugees to Turkey. The country's Kurdish population has taken to the streets over Ankara's noninterference position taken in the Syrian conflict, despite a parliamentary approval for military action.
