BRUSSELS, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The EU leaders adopted 2030 climate and energy framework, which provides for mandatory increase of renewable energy share up to a third of the union's total consumption, according to the report from the October European Council meeting published on its official website Friday.

"An EU target of at least 27 percent is set for the share of renewable energy consumed in the EU in 2030," the report reads.

"The European Council endorsed a binding EU target of an at least 40 percent domestic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990," the document states.

It is said that the target could be reached if all member states participate in the effort fairly.

The European Council has also stressed the importance of a "fully functioning and connected internal energy market" and mobilizing the efforts to achieve the set objectives.

Energy security also was on the meeting's agenda. The European Council agreed to "implement critical projects of common interest in the gas sector, such as the North-South corridor, the Southern Gas Corridor and the promotion of a new gas hub in Southern Europe", as well as to diversify energy suppliers.

The European Council's meeting, chaired by the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, took place Thursday night. Its main goal was to reach a comprehensive agreement on the new climate and energy policy, as well as to discuss the state of the European economy and several foreign policy issues.
