GENEVA, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - The number of deaths, caused by Ebola virus, has increased by more than 300 in five days, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported Wednesday.

According to the situation report, released by WHO on Wednesday, "a total of 4,877 deaths have been reported." Moreover, "a total of 9,936 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease have been reported in five affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Spain, and the United States of America) and two previously affected countries (Nigeria and Senegal) up to the end of 19 October."

As of October 14, the organization reported about 4,546 deaths and 9,191 virus cases.

The current Ebola epidemic started in southern Guinea in February and later spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal, with several Ebola cases having been reported outside of West Africa. Last week, the WHO confirmed that the outbreak in Senegal is now over. Earlier this week, Nigeria was also declared Ebola-free.

At the moment, there is no officially approved medication for Ebola. However, Russia, alongside the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan and Canada, is currently working on a vaccine.
