Spokesman of the Hong Kong police stated that 94 demonstrators had been arrested after start of protests in Hong Kong.

MOSCOW, October 21 (RIA Novosti) — Some 94 demonstrators have been arrested in Hong Kong's Mong Kok district alone since October 3, a spokesman for the local police said Tuesday.

Among those arrested are 87 men and 7 women, said Hong Kong police spokesman Steve Hui, according to the local Phoenix Television broadcaster.

The transport situation in the city has been greatly affected by the protests and the Court of First Instance, one of two courts comprising Hong Kong's High Court, has granted a temporary injunction requiring protesters to clear occupied roads, Hong Kong's government informed on its official website.

Major protests began in Hong Kong on September 27 when demonstrators took to the streets to speak out against the Chinese government's plans to control the region's 2017 election.

Protesters claim Beijing has gone back on its pledge to allow universal suffrage in Hong Kong, which was promised a high degree of autonomy when it was handed back to China by Britain in 1997.
