Attempts at toppling governments and forcefully changing power bring nothing but chaos and give rise to terrorism, the Russian envoy to the United Nations said Thursday at a security conference in Switzerland.

GENEVA, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - Attempts at toppling governments and forcefully changing power bring nothing but chaos and give rise to terrorism, the Russian envoy to the United Nations said Thursday at a security conference in Switzerland.

“Attempts to topple foreign governments and the use of brute force to interfere with other countries’ home affairs unleash chaos that gives rise to extremism and terrorism,” Russia’s UN representative Alexei Borodavkin said at the Crans Montana Forum while commenting on security threats in the Middle East.

Borodavkin blamed the rise and expansion of terrorist groups in the region on the inertia of the international community that “failed to close its ranks against this plague, despite Russia warning it since the very start of the ‘Arab Spring’ that terrorism should be considered the biggest threat to the region.”

The envoy urged the global community to work together to address the rise of extremism in Syria this threat before it was too late, adding that the Syrian government and moderate opposition movements should “present a common front against jihadists.”

The Crans Montana Forum is a Swiss-based international organization created in the southwestern city of Crans Montana. This year’s forum focused on global security challenges.
