MOSCOW, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - The US State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and officials in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania have launched a probe into the depositing of 4,000 gallons of wastewater caused by fracking activities into the sewer system of Greene County borough, Post-Gazette reported Wednesday.
"Waynesburg officials feel they are vulnerable somewhere in their sewer system," DEP spokesman John Poister told Post-Gazette. "Someone removed a manhole in a remote location and dumped the fluid."
Poister stated that the DEP would send inspectors to Waynesburg in a bid to discover how the dumping occurred and who caused it.
According to Post-Gazette, the fluid dump was found at the end of September by Waynesburg Sewage Treatment Plant workers.
"That was the first time we noticed anything like that, and we haven't seen it again, but we are concerned we might," assistant borough manager Bryan Cumberledge said.
The Waynesburg Sewage Treatment Plant does not have the capacity to treat salty and chemical-laden wastewater, according to Post-Gazette.
