MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - Californian McDonald’s confessed to having used ammonia-treated 'pink slime', azodicarbonamide and artificial preservatives until 2011 which made its burgers and fries stay “fresh” for a long time, the Independent reported on Tuesday.

“There are varied uses for azodicarbonamide, including in some non-food products, such as yoga mats,” the company’s website page says. “As a result, some people have suggested our food contains rubber or plastic, or that the ingredient is unsafe.

Numerous experiments, carried out by curious eaters over the last decade, caused surprise and perplexity among fast-food consumers as, after being held in cupboards for many years, fries and burgers looked as fresh as the day they had been prepared. Such experiments evoked a stream of unpleasant rumors with people assuming that McDonald’s beef contained worm meat, cow eyeballs, as well as toxic substances.

In order to banish negative myths about its products, McDonald’s launched a new “Our Food. Your Questions” campaign and invited a team from Good Morning America (GMA) into their California factory.

The company clarified that its products never contained worms, lips or eyeballs, as people gossiped about. It also stated that “pink slime”, or ammonia-treated boneless lean beef trimmings, have not been used in its burgers since 2011.

However, the company admitted that it used “pink slime” from 2004 until 2011, as well as the chemical “azodircarbonite”, which, according to the Environmental Working Group, can have negative consequences for human health related to respiratory diseases, asthma and allergies. The company had also confessed that the beef its burgers are made from was sourced from hormone-grown cattle.

Although small amounts of such “artificial” ingredients are not considered dangerous, constant consumption of such products can pose significant risks for human health.

Nonetheless, McDonald’s has announced that it will pursue a new transparency strategy to make its customers confident about their food products.  It has also motivated people to send questions via social networks and declares it is ready to reveal any information regarding its food components.
