KIEV, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian parliament members from the All-Ukrainian Union Svoboda introduced a new bill on Monday on “terminating the agreement of establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)”, a statement on the Verkhovna Rada official website said.
According to the statement, the bill was developed by Svoboda Party members Aleksei Kayda and Aleksander Mirniy.
The full text of the bill has not been published yet.
The day after Crimea that refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new Ukrainian government signed a reunification treaty with Russia on March 18, Kiev stated that it would abandon its post as this year’s rotating head of the CIS, adding it may also reconsider its membership in the organization altogether. The Republic of Belarus then became the CIS head for this year.
The CIS currently has nine fully-fledged members: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan and Ukraine have ratified the creation agreement, but stopped short of formalizing their membership by ratifying the CIS charter.
Georgia withdrew from the CIS after a brief military conflict with Russia over its breakaway republic of South Ossetia in 2008.
