Suicide-bombers from the Islamic State (IS) militant group have set off two car bombs in the east and south of Kobani, located on the Syrian-Turkish border, Al Mayadeen reported Monday.

BEIRUT, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Suicide-bombers from the Islamic State (IS) militant group have set off two car bombs in the east and south of Kobani, located on the Syrian-Turkish border, Al Mayadeen reported Monday.

Reports on the victims and injured are yet to be made.

The Lebanese TV channel LBC earlier reported that the international coalition against the IS launched eight airstrikes on IS positions in Syria on Monday. Eight of the airstrikes targeted the suburbs of the Kurdish city of Kobani.

According to media records, several mortar shells fell near a checkpoint on the Syrian-Turkish border during the course of military actions between the Kurdish militia and the jihadists.

The militant group has been leading a large-scale attack on Kobani for over 20 days. More than 200,000 civilians have fled into the neighboring Turkey, with the IS taking control of over 100 villages, located on the outskirts of the city.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories over which it had control.

US Airstrikes against the Islamic state began on September 15, with other countries such as France and the United Kingdom, joining later to form an airstrike coalition to fight the militant group.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain and Qatar are also reported to have carried out airstrikes against the Islamic State in partnership with the United States.
