SOCHI, October 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix in Sochi indicates the possibilities and prospects for the country's economic development, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who is also the head of the F1 organizing committee, said Friday.
"We once again draw attention to our country, show its potential and prospects for economic development," Kozak told reporters.
Kozak, together with Krasnodar Region Governor Alexander Tkachev, visited the Sochi Autodrom, where the 16th race of the season's 19 Grands Prix officially kicked off.
"This is a very important event for the development of both the motor sport and the automobile industry. We made it possible together with the preparation for the Olympics," the deputy prime minister noted.
Kozak added that the event is attended by a large number of spectators.
"Formula 1 enjoys great popularity globally, and now will become popular in our country too," he said.
The landmark event for Russian and international motorsport will be held at the Sochi Autodrom, the first and only circuit in Russia hosting Formula 1 races, on October 10-12.
The circuit is 5.852 kilometers (2.637 miles) long and includes 19 turns. The maximum speed that can be achieved on the track is 320 kph (199 mph).
