The United States and the United Kingdom have discussed ways of continuing with their support of Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Wednesday following a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

WASHINGTON, October 8 (RIA Novosti) – The United States and the United Kingdom have discussed ways of continuing with their support of Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Wednesday following a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

“We spent some time this morning discussing ways in which the UK and the US can work with other partners, international partners particularly in the European Union, to continue to support President Poroshenko,” Hammond said.

“Ukraine’s President Poroshenko will need continuing international support to ensure stability within the country and to ensure that the Ukraine is able to go on making decisions about its own future,” Hammond noted.

Meanwhile Kerry told journalists Wednesday that the United States and the United Kingdom support Ukraine’s sovereignty and the Kiev authorities’ efforts to implement reforms in the country.

“Together with our partners in the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom are supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the Ukrainian government’s efforts to implement important democratic reforms,” Kerry said.

Earlier on Wednesday, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland said Ukraine is working on a proposal “for international monitoring for restoration of the sovereignty of the international border”, which will presented to Russia and the international community.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Nuland discussed the implementation of the Minsk agreements aimed at resolving the situation in southeastern Ukraine.

According to a statement on the official website of Ukraine’s president, the parties have reviewed such issues as the establishment of full control over the Ukrainian-Russian border and the necessity of taking urgent measures to avoid a humanitarian disaster in Ukraine.

Ukraine has been suffering from an internal conflict since April, when Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters in the country’s southeastern regions.

The West has since accused Russia of meddling in Ukraine’s internal affairs and rendering support to independence fighters of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DPR and LPR) – claims that Moscow has repeatedly denied.
