MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - An Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed that cross-border shelling is continuing from Pakistan over the Durand Line in the eastern Kunar Province of Afghanistan, the Khaama Press reported Tuesday.
Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said that reports of cross-border shelling stopping are false.
The Pakistani military has been shelling the eastern provinces of Afghanistan, including Kunar and Nuristan in recent years, amounting to over 5,000 rockets fired in Kunar Province. The shelling has left dozens of people dead and many others injured.
The Afghan-Pakistan border dispute first started in the 19th century when Pakistan was part of British-owned India. The British imposed the 2,640-kilometer (1,640-mile) border, known today as the Durand Line. Despite past agreements, the Islamabad and Kabul governments have argued over the border for the past 65 years. The present Kabul government does not have any formal policy on the Durand Line, however, Afghan Border and Tribal Affairs Minister Abdul Karim Brahui once told the Afghan Parliament in 2006 that the country does not recognize the border officially.
