MOSCOW, October 6 (RIA Novosti) – The United Nations and other international organizations should join the probe into war crimes in Ukraine as the Kiev government’s investigation has produced no results, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.
“Judging by the fact that no progress was made in investigating these incidents, it is possibly time for international organizations, such as the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the United Nations… to take the responsibility of ensuring an unbiased and fair investigation,” he said.
During the Ukrainian crisis, which escalated as new Kiev authorities launched special military operation against independence supporters in eastern Ukraine, many war crimes have been conducted.
In September, several mass graves filled with the bodies of massacred civilians and independence supporters, killed execution-style, were discovered 35 kilometers northeast of Donetsk.
In July, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. A preliminary report on the crash released by the Dutch Safety Board suggested that the plane was hit by high-energy objects.
In May, Right Sector gunmen, together with pro-Kiev militants, blocked the anti-government protesters in the House of Trade Unions in the city of Odessa and set the building on fire, killing at least 48 people and injuring more than 200.
Apart from that, many civilians died as Ukrainian army shelled populated areas.
Moscow has repeatedly highlighted an importance of a thorough, transparent international investigation into the above incidents. However, Kiev officials insisted on conducting their own investigation, which never yielded any results.
