MOSCOW, October 6 (RIA Novosti) – Formula 1 racing driver Jules Bianchi of the Marussia team remains in critical condition after sustaining a severe head injury during the Japanese Grand Prix, Sky Sports reported Monday.

Bianchi is now at the Mie General Hospital in Japan, where he underwent a three-hour-long surgery. Following the operation, he was moved to intensive care for monitoring.

According to Sky Sports, Bianchi is unable to breathe unaided and is now relying on a respirator.

The accident occurred on lap 44 of the Japanese Grand Prix. Due to adverse weather conditions and approaching typhoon Phanfone, Adrian Sutil's car slid from the track on lap 42, following which a recovery vehicle went out to assist the driver. Two laps later, Bianchi's car, which also went out of control, struck the recovery vehicle.

After the ambulance appeared on track, the race was red-flagged.

Numerous auto racing pundits have blamed Grand Prix organizers for the accident, saying that given the heavy rain the safety car should have been deployed right after Sutil's crash.

The race in Suzuka was brought to an early conclusion, Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes AMG, won the race. Nico Rosberg, also racing for Mercedes AMG, finished second, while Daniel Ricciardo from Infiniti Red Bull Racing took third place.
