May-Britt and Edvard Moser and John O'Keefe won this year’s Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for research on human brain cells, the Nobel Prize Committee announced Monday.

STOCKHOLM, October 6 (RIA Novosti) – May-Britt and Edvard Moser and John O'Keefe won this year’s Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for research on human brain cells, the Nobel Prize Committee announced Monday.

The neuroscientists were awarded the prize for solving the mystery of how the human brain is able to map the space that surrounds us, and how people manage to navigate their way through their surroundings.

John O'Keefe from University College, London and husband-and-wife team May-Britt and Edvard Moser from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology discovered special nerve cells that form a positioning system in the brain.

May-Britt Moser also became the eleventh woman to win the Nobel prize for medicine since it's establishment in 1901.

The Nobel Prize awards ceremony for the trio is scheduled for December 10. Four of the five original prizes established by Alfred Nobel – for physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry and literature, as well as for economics – will be awarded in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Nobel Prize for physics is to be announced on October 7.
