ROSTOV-ON-DON, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - The flagship Russian carrier Aeroflot has canceled flights to Canada for indefinitely because of their unprofitability, the company's head Vitaly Savelyev told reporters on Friday after a meeting in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

"It will probably be for a long time, because we have already had the idea to pick up the flow of transit passengers from India, but it is impossible ... the flight to Toronto has become unprofitable for us," he said.

Savelyev added that the company can put on flights even if they do not yield scheduled passenger traffic within a year. "Afterwards we will look at the market [if it] does not develop, we begin to turn off the market," he said, adding that this was the case with the flight to Toronto.

Aeroflot is Russia’s flagship carrier and one of the largest airlines in Europe. The company and its partners serve more than 1,000 destinations in 178 countries around the world. In 2013, Aeroflot carried 20.9 million passengers, which is a record number for any Russian airline.
