Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has confirmed the detention of major drug cartel leader Hector Beltran Leyva.

MEXICO CITY, October 2 (RIA Novosti) – Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has confirmed the detention of major drug cartel leader Hector Beltran Leyva.

"Thanks to the efforts of the Armed Forces, the Office of the Mexican Attorney-General, the Federal Police and the CISEN [Mexican intelligence agency], Hector Beltran Leyva was detained today," Nieto said in his Twitter micro blog late Wednesday.

The Mexican leader added that the arrest of the drug lord confirms the efficiency of the government's security policy.

Earlier, the representatives from the Office of the Attorney-General also confirmed Leyva's detention. He was reportedly detained in a restaurant in San Miguel de Allende, a city in the state of Guanajuato.

The US authorities earlier declared a $5 million reward for the capture of Hector Beltran Leyva, also known as "The H". The Beltran Leyva cartel is reportedly involved in drug trafficking to the United States.

In February, Mexican security services arrested another drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, who headed the Sinaloa cartel and has been among the most wanted criminals of Mexico and the United States.
