MOSCOW, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - An explosion has been reported in the diplomatic district of the Afghan capital, Kabul the day before the inauguration of President-elect Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, Reuters reported Sunday.

Information regarding the cause of the explosion or the number of deaths or casualties is unknown at this point in time.

Security measures in the capital have been strengthened in anticipation of the inauguration scheduled for Monday.

On September 21, the State Election Commission of Afghanistan announced the final results of the presidential election declaring former finance minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai as the country's new president.

The results for Afghanistan's presidential elections held in June were originally released on July 7, declaring Ashraf Ghani the winner with 56 percent of the votes. However, his contender Abdullah Abdullah labeled the elections as fraudulent and said he would form his own government, regardless of the results.

Before announcing the official winner of the election on September 21, the two candidates signed a power-sharing agreement following weeks of negotiations. According to the deal, Ghani is to become the president, while Abdullah will occupy the newly-created position of chief executive, similar to the role of prime minister.
