MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow expects to sign an agreement with Astana to build a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan by the end of the year, an aide to the Russian president said Friday.

“An agreement to build a nuclear power plant in Kazakhtan is to be signed by the end of the year,” he said.

He also stated that the cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan in the sphere of high-tech industries and particularly in the nuclear industry is expanding.

On May 29, Moscow and Astana have already signed a memorandum of understanding to construct the nuclear power plant with a capacity of 300-1,200 megawatts near the Kazakh city of Kurchatov. The NPP will be equipped with Russia-made pressurized water reactors.

According to Rosatom, it will take up to 18 months to complete all necessary paperwork and gauge the required investment volumes. The first reactor is due to go into operation in 2016.

This will be the first power plant built in the country following the shutdown of its BN-350 nuclear reactor in 1999.
